Location:

This position is assigned to Grand Rapids Service Center located in Grand Rapids, MI. The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance from those locations or willing to relocate.

We are looking for: GIS Technician

The GIS Technician will be responsible for interpreting construction designs, as-built information, queries/reports and other engineering documents. This position maintains the electric LVD, HVD, gas distribution or gas transmission & storage system location and connectivity data in ArcGIS and/or CAD. The candidate will use multiple engineering and operating systems including SAP, ArcGIS, SIMS, outage management, MS Office, Power BI to query, QA/QC and collect data to support critical business functions.

The knowledge and skills involved with this position include but are not limited to:

  • Proficiency in using ArcGIS and/or CAD software
  • Experience reading and interpreting construction drawings
  • MS Windows Applications
  • Experience with utilities and ability to understand engineering concepts
  • Storm Restoration Activities
  • Written and Oral Communication/Interpersonal Skills
  • Working knowledge of SAP

We encourage you to apply if you have:

  • Associates degree in Geography (GIS) or technical field with a minimum of two (2) years of experience with ArcGIS technology within utilities
    • [OR] High School Diploma with a minimum of six (6) years of experience with ArcGIS technology within utilities
  • Experience reading and interpreting construction drawings
  • Field experience with design, construction and/or restoration is preferred

In this role, you will be responsible for:

  • Understand and adapt to standards and procedures to fit unique situations and problems in order to creates and update geospatial asset data in ArcGIS
  • Advise management on best practices and process changes
  • Develop new practices and procedures in order to adjust to changing upstream and downstream requirements
  • Interpret construction designs for customer relocation, capacity projects, failures, reliability improvement projects or maintenance/inspections alongside as-built records, test results, survey data and other geospatial data sources
  • Review work orders for quality, and conformity of standards and interact with internal customers to gather missing or incomplete data and/or problem solve gaps
  • Communicate with customers both internal and external to CE on data requests/issues along with scheduling/coordinate workload with other departments
  • Interrogate and query various data repositories, run geoprocessing tools to ensure standard QA/QC rules apply
  • Performs complex data maintenance and problem-solving solutions; ability to use GIS geoprocessing tools for complex analytics
  • Support, recommend and/or perform updates of department work instructions and procedures to fit new standards
  • The role may be required to assist with storm and emergency restoration activities which includes both office and field assignments
  • Other duties as assigned or may be necessary
