Job Description

General Purpose of Job:

To promote Sparrow Ionia Hospital/SMG Ionia Orthopedics, Ionia County, its school systems, student-athletes, athletic directors, coaches, parents, and community members.

Essential Duties:

This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Associates may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.

  • Work in a collaborative manner with Orthopedic Surgeons, Orthopedic Administration, medical providers, and outpatient rehabilitation services to develop, market, and implement Sparrow Ionia Hospital and SMG Ionia Orthopedics.
  • Staff the contracted high school's athletic training room and provide full-time coverage during all regularly scheduled athletic practices and sessions, from the start of fall sports season conditioning and "two-a-day" practices to the end of the school year.
  • Provide on-site staffing of all regularly scheduled "home" and "away" sporting events for contracted high school athletic programs as requested in advance by the athletic director.
  • Facilitate and maintain communication, as appropriate, between student-athletes and their parent/guardian(s), coaches and school administration, and medical providers.
  • Assist high school athletic director with recommendations for supplies and equipment needs.
  • Assist high school, if asked, with the contracted school's Medical Emergency Response Team and Plan.
  • Create and maintain an Emergency Action Plan (EAP) for each sports venue for the contracted high school.
  • Educate coaches and appropriate staff on relevant EAP specifics.
  • Assist in contracted high school's development and/or maintenance of their MI HEARTSafe certification.
  • Work in a collaborative manner with SIH medical providers, rehab professionals, and administration to develop, market, and implement educational programs covering children and adolescent recreational-related issues. (e.g. ACL sprain/tear, ankle sprain, concussion, asthma, muscle strains, and tendonitis)
  • During "off-season/summer break", provide clinic coverage or assist in program development as directed by one-up leader.

Job Requirements
General Requirements * Certification in Athletic Training from the National Athletic Trainers Association. * Current State of Michigan Athletic Trainer license * Current BLS Certification
Work Experience * Athletic Training experience in a school setting preferred
Education * Bachelor of Science in athletic training or physical education/health from a program accredited by the Secretary of the Department of Education and/or Council on Post-Secondary Accreditation recognized agency.
Specialized Knowledge and Skills * Interpersonal skills to communicate with patients, families, physicians, nurses and other healthcare providers effectively and appropriately. * Effective written and verbal communication skills, strong interpersonal skills. * Adapting to changing work situations is required quickly and often. * Able to demonstrate the knowledge and skill necessary to provide care based on physical, psycho/social, educational, safety and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients serviced in her/his assigned service area as related to the principal duties and responsibilities of the position. The skills and knowledge needed to provide such care may be gained through education, training, and experience. * Ability to adapt care techniques based on the patient's unique needs.
