Job Summary:

The following description of job responsibilities and standards are intended to reflect the major responsibilities and duties of the job, but are not intended to describe the duties or other responsibilities that will be assigned as deemed necessary.

Under general direction of the Director/Manager of Plant Operations, or their liaison, shift operator who is responsible for operation, maintenance, installation and replacement of utility production and distribution systems. Items such as chillers, HVAC, boilers, electrical distribution, medical gas, fire protection, pneumatic/DDC controls, Energy Management, water chemical treatment, etc., in a safe, effective and efficient manner in response to or in support of customer needs. Responsible for installing and maintaining dust barrier when performing job duties.

Must fill out completed work orders and/or daily time sheets and turn them in on a daily basis. Monitors and maintains required supplies and tools in a neat and orderly fashion insuring that proper inventory is maintained, tools are functioning properly and readily accessible and that the work/production areas are in a clean and neat manner as evidenced by management or regulatory observation. Notify management of needed supplies in a timely manner by filling out material request forms.

Primary Job Duties:

- Responsible for responding to house calls in a timely manner

- Responsible for completion of operational logs, reports, corrective and preventative work orders

- Responsible for handling off-hours shift and week-end calls by contacting necessary hospital staff, coordinating with hospital personnel or by contacting outside service companies.

- Monitoring hospital equipment - making and logging necessary adjustments

- Assist/supervise contractors as necessary when making repairs or working in building

Minimum Job Qualifications:

Education: High School graduate or equivalent.

Experience: 5 to 7 years of documented work experience in the operation, maintenance and repair of chillers and boilers in a 400,000 sq. ft. commercial, industrial, institutional facility where the chiller plant capacity is 2,000 tons or greater and with a boiler plant of 40,000 lbs./hr. steam capacity or greater.

Licensure: City of Dearborn, 1st Class Stationary Engineer, CFC Cert

Skills & Abilities:

* Good working knowledge of refrigeration, boiler and HVAC systems operations and

* maintenance.

* Self-motivated with excellent problem solving skills.

* Ability to operate Energy Management System.

* Ability to read and interpret mechanical and electrical blue prints, owner manuals, diagrams and schematics.

Physical Requirements:

* Strength: Position requires incumbent to frequently to perform physical activities requiring ability to push, pull and lift objects weighing from 20 to more than 100 pounds.

* Manual Dexterity: Position requires incumbent to frequently perform moderately difficult manipulative tasks such as using a screwdriver, shovel and other hand tools.

* Coordination: Position requires incumbent to frequently perform gross body coordination such as walking pushing a cart and lifting material.

* Mobility: Position requires incumbent to frequently perform mobility skills such as walking, standing and sitting to occasionally perform in uncomfortable standing and sitting positions.

* Visual Discrimination: Position requires incumbent to occasionally see objects closely such as cleanliness of swept surfaces, fasteners such as screw heads, and to discriminate colors as in signage and occasionally see objects up close as in reading gauges.

* Hearing: Position requires incumbent to occasionally hear normal sounds with some background noise and to distinguish sound as voice patterns when listening to directions.

Mental Requirements:

* Concentration: Position requires incumbent to frequently concentrate on moderate detail with some interruption.

* Attention Span: Position requires incumbent to constantly attend to a task or function for up to 3 hours at a time.

* Conceptualization: Position requires incumbent to frequently understand and relate specific ideas generally one at a time.

Environmental Conditions:

Position requires incumbent to be constantly exposed to a variety of environment within the plant setting. In addition, exposure to a variety of substances will be possible such as steam, hot water, water treatment chemicals, low/high ambient temperatures, adhesives, electrical hazards, hazardous waste, sawdust, loud and/or unpleasant noise, high humidity or wetness, etc. Proper ear, eye and skin protect is provided and should be worn as needed.
