What’s the DCI difference? In a word, depth – the depth of our expertise, experience, distribution network, diverse product line and, driving it all, the depth of our commitment to helping customers build superior specialty cheese programs. You’ll find our cheeses on menus, in manufactured products and on retail shelves from coast to coast. And you’ll find us where we’ve been for more than 30 years – quietly growing our business, and our customers' businesses, from our Wisconsin headquarters, where great cheese is a way of life. Our Mission Statement DCI Cheese Company's mission is to be the leading supplier in the value added cheese industry through innovation, solutions, and results. Mission Fulfillment We will carry out the mission profitably, with a focus on sustained growth, building long term customer relationships, always providing outstanding service and quality products. The DCI Story DCI Cheese Company has grown in just over 30 years to become a leading supplier of American made and imported specialty cheeses. Our unique business model has evolved to comprise a portfolio of leading company-owned brands, dedicated supplier partnerships and consolidation capabilities that enable us to offer customized, full-service specialty cheese programs. Founded in 1975 to provide marketing support for small to medium-sized specialty food suppliers, DCI Cheese Company launched its first company-owned brand, Salemville Cheese, in 1991. The following year, DCI obtained U.S. agent status for the Black Diamond cheese brand, and has grown that brand from 100,000 pounds sold in 1992 to 70% of the total U.S. Canadian imported chedder market. Becoming employee-owned in 1994, DCI continued to evolve its unique business model throughout the 1990s and beyond, establishing the first of several dedicated supplier/manufacturing partnerships, Carter/Meister LLC, in 1997. In 1998, the company formed a licensing agreement with Italy’s Auricchio family for U.S. rights to the Auricchio Americano brand, and in 2001 established the Carter/North Hendren LLC specialized supplier/manufacturing partnership. Originally founded as a supplier-focused consultant and agent, DCI in 1998 made a strategic shift to become a customer-focused supplier of premium DCI-owned or exclusively held brands. Those brands today include: In addition, DCI’s portfolio of supplier partnerships has grown to include Wisconsin’s award-winning Klondike Cheese Company (Odyssey brand Feta cheese), Park Cheese Company (Casaro brand Italian-style cheeses), and Michigan’s Old Europe Cheese Company (Reny Picot brand classic Gouda, Fontina, Edam, Brie, Camembert....artisanal cheeses, Camembert Fermier and Carre St. Joseph). A new chapter in our history was written in 2003, with the company’s official name change from Dan Carter, Inc., to DCI Cheese Company, and with the opening of our new consolidated warehouse in Appleton, Wisconsin. With more than 300 items stocked, DCI now serves as a true one-stop-shop specialty cheese supplier. In April 2005, another milestone was reached. DCI Cheese Company was acquired by Fairmount Foods, and its equity sponsor, GTCR Golder Rauner, LLC. DCI Cheese Company was carefully chosen as their first acquisition due to our financial success, great team of people, strong brands, unique business model, and advanced systems. Additional growth is planned through continued vertical integration and synergistic acquisitions. |
